AoS seems... interesting (also I'm back! ish?)

Post by Dalamar »

Hey guys! Long time no see.

When I saw the new Morathi model I decided to find a group to play with and see what the whole AoS is about.
I'm playing in a league where we started with 500 points and are adding 300 points every other week so by now we're up to 1400 points starting next week.

This brings me to a realization... out of the whopping two battleline units available to Daughters of Khaine, can someone please help me figure out why would anyone take Sisters of Slaughter over Witch Elves with two daggers? Seems like a loss of damage in return of some defense and a relatively useless pile in ability and for extra 20 points on top of that. If they were the same cost I'd see the appeal, but with the additional 20 points I just don't see it.

Picked up my first box of new stuff today, snake ladies I will put together as archers as my army is currently sorely lacking ranged power.

Thoughts? It's good to be back. (because 9th age is a disaster)

Well, bearing in mind I've not played the new edition of AoS yet...

SoS have a two inch range on their melee attacks, which for large units is very useful. Witch Aelf units of more than 20 will have trouble all getting close enough to attack, but SoS are less likely to have that problem.

Also, Dance of Death makes it easier to surround enemy units to stop them pulling back from the combat. And you can pull a neat trick by standing just outside 3" so the enemy cannot attack your SoS unit before the SoS are ready to attack them (useful if your opponent has initiative).

I agree that Witches are probably more cost-effective, though. And even SoS should consider swapping their bucklers for knives.

EDIT: Also, welcome back!

Standing outside of 3" does not help because you can't pile in unless you charged in the same turn (which means being within 1/2" of the enemy or the charge fails) or happen to be less than 3" from enemy through other circumstances.

This basically negates their pile in rule as you also can't just walk around the enemy unit, your pile in move needs to bring you closer to the nearest enemy model that you started by.

My initial understanding was that they could just walk up within 6" without charging and then do a surprise pile-in, that would be a useful ability. Time to check faq I guess.

Will we get to see some of those new models in P&M - the place needs some inspiration.

Heh, perhaps. I also put together my Raging Heroes kickstarter pledge, but after such a long time away from the hobby, I'm just getting back to it and putting things together is a first step. Haven't thought about painting anything yet.

Always good to see one of the old guard posting.

I'm not on the AoS train but many of the new models are wonderful.

Enjoy your new charges + let us see them in the PnM in due course 8)

Nobody plays 8th in my area anymore

I tried 9th but I found the environment far too toxic and unstable to enjoy the game, plus completely arbitrary rules changes happening all the time for no reason other than "this was OP in 8th so we nerfed it" combined with ignoring input from people playing the game put me off.

So I was left with AoS but didn't have a lot of interest in it till Daughters of Khaine came out and I saw the new Morathi :D I'm just happy to get my plastic toy soldiers back out... they got pretty damn dusty.

They changed the wording of that for 2nd edition. You just need to end the pile in move no further away than you started, so you can slide around the enemy model's base even if you start the move in contact.

Yeah, I re-read that and noticed the difference.

Also after re-reading rules for piling in and Sisters of Slaughter rule I came to a conclusion that they can indeed pile in without charging.

The rules say any unit that has successfully charged (which puts it within 1/2" of an enemy model) *or* that is within 3" of an enemy can pile in. There is no prerequisite of charge of be charged to pile in, as long as you're within 3" you can. It's just that other than one side charging you can never enter within 3" of an enemy (except Tenebreal Shard)
Sisters of Slaughter extend that to 6" which makes them the only unit in the game that can wait outside of combat and then pile in within 2" of an enemy to attack them with their whips without risking ever being attacked back. You just have to make sure the target unit already did their pile in move that turn, otherwise they will close the gap and attack back.
