Question About New Magic Rules

Post by Maldor »

I've seen that under the 8th Ed rules no two casters in the army (with a few exceptions) can know the same spell. Does this mean that each spell can now only be cast once per magic phase, or did they get rid of the limitation that each caster can only cast each spell once per phase?

as far as i'm aware, you can still only cast the same spell once (this includes different power levels of the same spell, no casting of a small fireball of D6 hits and then the larger one of 3D6 hits)

Aside from the Signature spell which every mage can know and every mage can cast once per phase, all spells can be cast once (since no more than one wizard can know them).

This encourages you to take wizards knowing multiple lores if you want to cast more than one spell #6

On the other hand, taking 3 level 2 on a single Lore grants you 100% to get once THE spell you wish absolutely to get.

If you're interested. With the change to rolling for spells (you now get to pick the second spell when you roll a double) The chances of getting a specific spell are as follows.

Code: Select all

Spells to  Chance of a
  Roll     Specific spell
  1              16.66%
  2              44.44%
  3              72.22%
  4              90.74%
  5              98.46%

So much for shutting down shooting with multiple Chillwinds.

Wait 2 weeks, and see what our magic looks like then.

You can take multiple chillwinds. The BRB specifies that lores outside the 8 in the BRB that give the option to switch for a spell can be taken by multiple mages as if they were signature spells themselves. As a short list of examples: Chillwind, Treesinging, Flickering Fire, Skitterleap, etc. I presume this would also affect special mages like the HE dragonmage and Skaven warplock engineers with their option to switch for a non-#1 spell from a lore, but tbh I doubt we'll know that for sure until the errata and FAQ come out explaining in detail.

I'd have through PoD would be considered the signature spell. Oh well. Still eager to see what changes we get to the lore.

Unless Errata'd, Chillwind follows the rules of "signature spells" as it's the spell you change anything you roll to.

Power of Darkness is a spell outside of any lores, you have it no matter which lore you take.

Now they might errata it any way they please, so wait for those.
