Is a Cauldron of Blood too much for 1500 point games?

How to beat those cowardly High Elves?

Is a Cauldron of Blood too much for 1500 point games?

Post by Atropos »

I'm going to start a league on January. 9 games in total (3 at 1500, 3 at 1750 and 3 at 2000 points).
So I was wondering whether a Cauldron of Blood would be worth its points in a 1500 point list.
Has anyone of you had good experiences with a Cauldron in small games?

Thank you.

My experience is limited, but like with every question of this nature you could ask, it depends what you take it with. I would say that if you take enough troops to still have units that can effective use it towards the end of the battle, and protect it through out, then it can be very effective.

On a small scale this works well with a warrior/core heavy army. You could also try a msu type army, but remember to think about what can best protect the Cauldron.

CoB - 200

5 DR - 110
RxB

15 Spears - 105
Shields

10 WE - 100

10 ExE - 120

5 CoK - 192
Champ, Standard, ROH

Hydra – 175

1002 points

That’s my list I am using in an on going league style tournament.

I have had one win vs HE but I don’t really count it as a proper win as his list wasn’t constructed for anything more than a mess around.

Still it have all the elements you need and I think all that mine lacks is a bit more magic and bigger WE and ExE units and of course harpies! Of course at 1000 points you need to tone down, but what I bring here I think will perform soundly when we actually kick off.

I did a Battle Rep of the He battle if you want to read through, the CoB helped me in every round, even the first as a warded up Hydra deters any fire magic onto the CoK and the RoH then pulled me to victory.

In short I love the CoB and may change my approach at 2k for it as well.

I never leave without my CoB in less than 2000 point games.
I love to killing blow vamp generals with a 66P unit of harpies :D

Harpies can't be blessed by the cauldron can they?

It says pick a friendly unit in my book, so I guess they can.

They can't, it's in the harpies' "beast" rule (can't remember what it's actually called, the one saying they don't trigger panic when getting killed)

They can't. It clearly says so in their description.
Nevertheless the Cauldron still rocks, and so do the Harpies!

As long as you have some units that can benefit from it then the Cauldron will be a good investment.

Talking about Killing Blow generals. How about a unit of 5 Witch Elves? Can easily suicide charge in and will get 9 attacks, reasonable chance of Killing Blow for 50 points.

I prefer Corsairs with SSS banner for this because Poison Attacks will migrate some of your KB attempts.

At 1500 points, the Cauldron isn't a bad choice. I played the Cauldron once in a 2000 points tournament and I liked the experience, even if my list was called cheesy when it was far from being cheesy.

the cauldron is great in 1500 points games, heck I even use one at 1000 points

Very helpful topic, I have a 1500 point game next monday (I usually played 2250) and had been wondering about the cauldron. Thanks for the ideas :)
