I'd say go for an IRC based chatroom. With Java content if that can be done. As for Darkprincess, imagine druchiiplayers all over the world gathering money to buy her a new laptop... how much would be needed f evryone donated? 2$ a eprsone? 3?

Yes, I can see the problem of people then wanting lots and lots of items. It's not like we all HAVE to donate. But if you feel like it...

anyway, it was JUST an idea...

er...quite a lot less...

If EVERYONE donated £1 we could buy about 5 laptops.

On a side note, donations for my wedding would be nice...

I will find a way. Now if the asur chat would run on java1 instead of java2, then I'd have no problem. It's not the chat itself that's the problem, but the massive resource overheads of the java2 runtime environment.

Whatever happenned to efficient programming ?

Oh no - not irc :(

anything but irc
dodgy colour support (client-specific), crap smileys, really bad security - the list goes on and on. I despise irc so much I can taste it

:(

of course if Kitrik can code something like the asur chat which is basically irc with an (almost) human interface and get it to work on java1 then that would be something.

dp - as much as I'd like to help you out and get something that works for you, I really need to think about the community as a whole first. A lot of people want chat and they don't care in what form it comes. Java IRC is the only solution at this point that I'm willing to work with. Hopefully in the future we can find another superior chatting system that is akin to everyone's taste.

As far as
dodgy colour support (client-specific), crap smileys, really bad security

the color support isn't that bad I don't think...
The smileys are crap, But if I use the java IRC program that I think I'm going too, we can have all of our sweet smileys in place no sweat!
And as far as security goes - I don't know what's so insecure about it - care to point me to a few webpages detailing the insecurities?

Ok, quick question- when you say java IRC, would I have to download an IRC client, or is that exactly the same thing as Asur.org? If it's like Asur.org, that's cool; it's better than nothing.

Yeah - Agree with Auric here - a java irc would be fine but its the system overhead I have to think about - the problem with the asur chat is the java2RE thing not the chat itself - if the chat would work from within the standard jave (java1 as we have come to call it) then it'd be just fine. The Asur chat isn't too bad and a lot better than the usual irc stuff.

@Kitrik: If you can get a nice java irc chat which supports nice smileys and colours etc, then that'll be great. All I ask is that you try to find something that will run sweetly on something less powerful than the latest gamer's systems. JUst do what you can - none of us could (or would) ask more than that. Ultimately, as I've said before, this chatroom must be for everybody, and my requirements have to take second place as you pointed out above. That's ok - I'm cool with that. In fact I wouldn't expect anything else.

We wait with eager anticipation to see what you have for us.

That pic may be the last memories we have of our glorious chat. Good work for getting a picture, nagathi!
It may never be back. We may have to spend the rest of our days on the asur.org chat...

Lord Kherith, the chat system Kitrik wants to implement will be similar to the one on Asur.org. However, their java applet will not look the same here on D.net. I think the room itself will be the same (another idea from Kitrik and Ricold - to collect all membs from the major sites in one channel), but the screen you will see when using the java applet will be the same interface as here on D.net.

Is there any particular problem in having our "own" chat?

i must say that i´d prefer to have our own chat as well, even though the people from a-org don´t talk much in their own chat.
but in the end i don´t mind sharing a chat with them, if that´s what´s the majority prefers.
