Building a Warmaster Army

Post by Vogon »

Greetings

Having just got back from my first ever game of Warmaster I really fancy starting an army.

I already have 2 units of Corsairs, 2 Hydras and a Manticore.

I know that I need some RXBs and that 2 Hydras in 1000pts is not allowed (hey it was games day and i got a bit carried away). So what does the collective recommend?

I plan to get to 1000pts then build from there in roughly 500pt chunks. I initially thought

General
Sorceress
2x Corsairs
2x RXB
2x CoK
1x DR
1x War Hydra
1x RBT

Which by my maths comes to 995.

Does this sound a good starting point? I thought I'd save the Manticore for the second batch and use a hero on it rather than the General.

Advice is more than welcome.

Cheers

More Dark Riders! They're as good in Warmaster as they are in Warhammer!

To be honest in a 1k army the hydra is an expensive option my personal preference would be this as a starter

General
Sorceress
2 spear (corsairs)
2 rxb
3 DR
2 COK
(995pts BP5)

Addition 1
1 hero on manticore
1 RBT
1 hydra
1 COK
(1460pts BP 7)

Addition 2
1 sorceress
2 spear
2 rxb
1 witch elves
1 harpy
1 hydra (as you've brougt it)
(2000pts BP10)

OK thanks for the oppinions.

The main reason for including the Hydra in the 1000pts is the fact that I already have them (and I LOVE the model). I realise that they are probably not the best tactical option in a small battle but I guess they just appeal to me.

And now to really show my ignorance what are the BP raitings you've given each of the forces?

Cheers

Sorry about the abbreviations, to give you a few more details about Warmaster, there are only really 2 ways to win the game;
1. kill your opponents general (not very likely) or
2. break your opponent (not literally though)

BP stands for Break Point.

This is the number of complete units your opponent must kill to win the game. Ideally you want an odd number of units in a list as the BP is determined by dividing the number of units (excluding characters) by 2 and rounding up i.e 9 units = BP5.

The ideal is to have as higher BP as possible whilst still retaining a good selection of troops. Characters on expensive mounts (hero on manticore) eat up lots of points but add nothing to your BP so are only really cost effective in bigger games.

With the requirement for the hydra I'd stick with what you had, the post I made was to illustrate what is probably a more optimal route to build a DE army. Looking at the BP value of the list you are starting with it is 5 the same as mine so looks like a good start.

Keledron

Thank you for that clarification.

Hopefuly I'll get some more bits ordered this weekend (2 RXBs and the Character pack) and with a bit of luck and and understanding opponent I should have the starting point ready in a few weeks time.

Cheers

Warmaster Army builds

When building a Warmaster army, think in terms of brigades too. 4 units can be brigaded and moved with one command at a time.

Consider blocks of 2 Corsairs brigaded with 2 RXB's. Think of your Cav in blocks of 4.

Also, 2 Reapers with 2 units of RXB's to protect them from flyers is always a good idea.

Next Harpies. I usually take as many as I can. Keep them hidden behind terrain until you're ready to use them. Then you can homeback them and with one command have them charge enemy artillery.

The only problem with them is you can't join a character with them.

Vogon81. You don't think so to what? Brigades? Protecting Reapers with RXB's?

Please clearify.
