First battle was lucky. Should I buy rope&hook next?

First battle was lucky. Should I buy rope&hook next?

Post by Geophrim »

This is what I started with before the battle:

Highborn (70): Rxb (35), Sword (10), free dagger --> 115
Fellblade (40): Halberd (10), Helmet (10) -->60
Fellblade (40): Sword (10), free dagger -->50
Sorceress (55): Rxb (35) -->90
Beastmaster (45): Spear (10) -->55
(2) Cold One Hounds (30): -->60
(1) Corsair (35):Rxb (35) -->70

Total: 8 models (but 6 +animals for Wyrdstone charts!) , 500pts

My opponent was a fellow first time player, using a small group of Possessed: Magister, (2) Possessed, (2) Beastman Gors. My strategy was just to run & gun, so I posted my sorceress, corsair, and HB on a rooftop to shoot away (along with 1 FB for CC defense in case someone got on the rooftop), while I left the other FB, the (2) CO's, and the BM to charge the Possess, with my CO's being throwaways so that I could voluntary route afterwards.

The battle results were surprisingly good for me. After 2 lucky criticals with the RxB's, the Possessed were both dead!!! My CO's succeeded in stupidity, each charged a Gor, and locked them into HtH, while the magister was charged by my FB and BM. My roof-borne FB tried a diving charge on the Gors, failed, and was OOA (which is why I'm thinking rope & hook as a next purchase...). My HB and corsair climbed down from the building naturally, and although both of my CO's were taken OOA, they each took 1 W from the Gors, so by going 2-1 with my men against the weakened Gors I managed to wipe out the whole Possessed band!!! My OOA's: 2 CO's and 1 FB (who fell... pathetic...).

This leads me to my question of what shall I do next? My surviving FB and sorc. each managed to kill off 2 of the Possessed band, so both leveled up. This is what I'm thinking of for my lvl'd up group. Note: one of my CO's died, so I had to replace it. My stupid FB managed to escape without permanent injuries, so I was happy at that.

80GC's to spend after selling wyrdstone--> 50 after replacing CO hound:

Highborn: Rxb, DE Sword (30+5gc), free dagger, rope&hook (5gc)
Fellblade: Halberd, Helmet, rope&hook (5gc) Skill: Powerful Build
(clutz) Fellblade: Sword (x2, one is the HB's old one), rope&hook (5gc)
Sorceress: Rxb Skill: Dodge
Beastmaster: Spear
(2) Cold One Hounds
(1) Corsair: Rxb

What do you guys think about the skill and item selection? Am I being too paranoid about people falling off buildings (too many rope&hooks)? Thanks very much!

Is the rope&hook worth buying?

Come on somebody, throw me a bone! ;) Is the rope&hook worth buying (especially early)?

5 GC for a re-roll of failed I test when climbing? It is definatly worth it. Especially when you have an elitest warband who's largest cause of death is embarrising falls.
I would recomend using the remaining gold to buy either a helmet for your highborn (or fellblade), an axe for a decent second weapon or save up to give your corsair a partner in life.
Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier, I had such a bad headache when I first saw your post.

Thanks Mielkith! No worries, PLEASE feel better first, that's the key thing!!!

So it sounds like while rope&hook are great, armor and weapons should be a higher priority first. OK, I can see how that would be true.

I guess I'll probably stick with the DE blade for the HB, go 2 helmets (noble and FB), and an axe for the Corsair. COme to think of it, the Corsair just has a dagger right now for HtH and that's pretty useless so the axe/dagger combo sounds pretty good, and it gives my HB a little bit of protection for his "noggin" even if he does fall off a roof...

By the way, do rope&hook affect the "diving charge" attack? Can we re-roll failed Init. tests for that if we have the rope?

It says take an I test for every 2" like a normal "jumping down" move. So presumably this means Rope and Hook give you a re-roll as normal.

Perfect! Well, I guess I'll just wait 1 more game or so before I go for any more flying charges (after next game is when I'll aim for the rope&hooks then)! Thanks Mielkeith!

It doesn't, a rope and hook only gives you the re-roll for climbing up. BTW did you give your fellblde that snotted himself experience for surviving? Unless he actaully died he get's it.

It gives you a re-roll climbing up and down, unless it has been revised somewhere.

Climbing is all it gives a bonus for though, a diving charge requires you to jump down, not climb.

Yes you are right. Climbing down and Jumping down are different things. Rope and hook does not give you a re-roll when attempting a diving charge.

Thank you both very much. I'd totally forgotten about giving my dwarf-wannabe FB experience. Perfect! Sad to hear about the ropes, but I'm stlll worrying about falling off walls too, so i guess I shouldn't complain.
