Help choosing a warband.

Post by Madlarks »

We're starting a mordheim campaign up after spring break and I"m at a loss as to which warband I should take. I'm debating between:

Mercs (using miltia models or easterlings we have on reikland player already)
Skaven (We have one already)
Shadow Warriors (Using WE and dropped hate for the druchii player to drop hate on me too)
Dwarfs (Dont have one)
Undead (My girlfriend is playing undead)

Any thoughts on whats best in the game (I play the underdogs in most other games so I dont mind winning with these guys) Or whats the most fun to play?

Skaven 5-1-3
WE 2-0

My only advice is to avoid armies that are no longer considered legit under the annual (look up errata-or faq's I cant remember which). This would only disclude the Shadow Warriors. I initially wanted to play with them, then I heard that they could become really really broken so I dropped that idea. Any army that becomes super shooty and that can avoid combat easily gets really frustrating for opponents (thus unfun). I dont know if you are looking to win or to have fun so I figured I should mention that.

If you want an army that is still really strong, but that still has a great deal of flavor, go with dwarves-they are pretty hard to crack, plus you can get all funny with voices and whatnot (if that is your thing). Good luck!

If you simply want to win, take dwarfs. They are overpowered. I also heard about problems with Shadow warriors, and since undead and Skaven are taken, you still have choice of non-Reikland mercs.

Dwarfs overpowered? All of my warbands (Marienburg, Middenheim and shadowwarriors) Finish them off, one of the best warbands I think are Shadow Warriors... That's my opinion anyway...

There are two warbands which seem according to my experience overpowered: Dwarves and Skaven BUT none warband is so overpowered to enable the player win without basic tactics on the table and mostly in creating the warband.

That is the same for other strong warbands (Reikland, Marienburg, O&G, ...)

The player who beats us constantly with his dwarven warband is able to play only dwarver, when he tried skaven and used to play with stunties player rats as dwarves, got beaten.

As to boring tactics with shooty elves - we had seen the same with dwarves. Dwarves camped in a good position are terrible.

So dwarves have two big advantages:
1) wyrdstone charity - they automaticly get 1 wyrdstone more
2) their Hard to kill rule

the universal T4 and the bigger range of their crossbows and pistols seems minor to these two. Also very usefull is their resource hunter skill which if fully developped allows you to find prisoners whenever you want in the after battle phase.

And they have several disadvantages, dwarven players complain about, but can easily overcome:
1) higher cost of their models - this is mostly an unhonest complaint without real substance - beardlings ar for 25gc as human warriors and they are the same or better, later in the game you fill your eventuall loses with prisoners rolle using the resource hunter skill
2) only 4 heroes in the beginning - this can be overcome with many henchmen in groups by one and the wyrdstone charity rule helps in the beginning enoug
3) M3 can be crippling in some scenarios, but usually you do not race but fight
4) only 12 model can be overcome by many good hired swords who are awailable to the warband and their higher T and hard to kill is important here
