Man O war

Post by Odium »

Man O' War was one of my favorite games and it is a shame that it is dead.

Does anybody still play it?

Would you support Games Workshop bringing it back?

Anybody know of any other companies that make miniatures that you could use for Man O' War?

Can you even get the rules anymore? I didn't see them with the Specialist Games on the Games Workshop Website?

I've got a poll. Please explain your answer.

Maybe. The game started out well, but was ruined by all the add-ons. The rules for the Chaos Dwarf fleets in particular were pretty broken I seem to recall.

Definitely yes, with hopefully new black ark models more resembling current black arks rather than old ships with skull prows.

Even forgeworld could start doing it just like they did Aeronautica Imperialis, some of 40k players I know really enjoy the small scale airfights.

Man o War suffered from the fault of many of GW games at that time.

IIRC only the Empire great ship actually used the saling rules, everyone else used alternate sailing rules or alternate means of propulsion.

The on top of that every race that came out suffered from edition creep, like chaos dwarfs, or glaring flaws like Norse (who could not board dwarfs and had no guns), or were stupidly random like skaven.

If they did do a complete rebuild of the game with all the rules and all the ship types included it might be OK to play.

If forgeworld did it you would find that the Empire would have 17 different types of ship, high elves 6, chaos 3, orks 3, Bretonnian 5 and everyone else nothing.

I loved it and played a loong time. Actually it was one of the first tabeltop games i played. But as time flow more and more "bugs" started to emerge.
There were fleets for almost every warhammer army - which was actually a bad thing...becouse there were races that were completly broken in both "to powerfull" or "completly random" factor and i heavly doubt that for example skaven are a sea-farring race but whatever. Also the game heavly suffered from miniatures which have become too surreal - like chaos dwarf fleet which haven't resembled ships anymore. The most fun i had playing was with simple, mirror matches with basic pirate/empire fleets...Those were balanced and fun to play. then came Sea monsters, rocket batteries, flyers , magic , Chaos and game became unbalanced like hell.
ps. I'm building ships to play Mano'war in warhammer scale:D , there were nice rules in "Warhammer:Generals compendium" also in fanmade "Warhammer Ahoy". They usually play it on gamesdays.

I played it a bit back in the day and pretty much agree with what everyone else has said above. If it was done properly it would be (and was) a fun diversion from WFB.

@Kargan - THat is so true about FW :D

Well the game that clearly spawned from mano war is Battlefleet Gothic - my number one GW game to this day. it's also not supported now like all SG games also it's ovcourse 40k but if someone miss mano war he should be more than satisfied with it.

Do warhammer historical not do a trafalgar game? It would be interesting if that could be adapted to serve as base mechanics for a new man of war.

There's a game called Uncharted Seas or something similar which is apparently very like Man O' War. I hear good things, but it's so popular that getting the miniatures is hard.

The models wuld be the game breaker for me. If DE had some nice galleys and a better looking black ark, I would be very interested.
