My friends and I are starting up a Mordheim campaign, and I decided to pick up something different from everyone else: Amazons!
Here's my starting 500gc:
Preistess - 130
Sunstaff
Champion - 95
Sword
Sun Gauntlet
Helmet
Totem Warrior - 70
Claw of the Old Ones
Sword
3x Amazon Warriors - 40 each
Spear
Buckler
I figure I'll start with this, then add another Champion ASAP and some Scouts as well for some shooting.

Expect to suffer badly early on, as you've got a tiny warband with only three heroes. In my old Druchii days I would have one more model and better equipment on most of them and I still struggled when the first of them went OOA. I'd say ditch the fancy wargear and get more warriors or another cheap hero for more income.

Is the warband too small? from what I gathered with my friends, most people are playing 5-8models.
I may drop some of the equipment on my characters, but I am playing with what I have, and I would have to wait for a direct order from GW to get more (and that has been known to take up to a month in Canada). So I am kind of playing with what I got as well, I only have 2 more models that I could toss in there anyways.
So, is it better to start off with more characters with less equipment, and gear them up through the game?

Definitely. Well, actually, it is matter of environment.
The more heroes you have, the better income you get and the faster your warband grows. And numerical superiority wins games. Also, expensive equipment with few models means high risk of big financial losses. Where I play, people tend to maximize both number of models and heroes. I have seen dwarfs starting with 14 models and Middenheimers starting with 17 models. When you meet a warband which outnumbers you by 50%, the math is pretty simple. The weaker warband is the first to take route test and then you have to decide if you stay and fight an enemy, which now outnumbers you even more, and risk anihilation, or retreat.
Of course, if people you play with use about 5 - 8 models, then you might be OK. Then I might even warn you not to introduce such powergaming as I have just described, because it is a sloppy road...
