What other tabletop miniatures games do you play?
My gaming group has been diversifying its portfolio of games over recent years, with the net result that we now play several different table top miniature based games. These include:
- Warhammer
- Warmachine/Hordes
- Malifaux
- Infinity
For Warhammer, I play:
- Dark Elves
- Dwarfs
- Warriors of Chaos
- Beastmen
For Warmachine, I play:
- Cygnar
- Rhuls
- Other Mercs (including Ashlynn and Magnus)
- Skorne
For Malifaux, I play:
- Arcanists (Rasputina)
For Infinity, I play:
- Pan Oceania (Knight Order)
I've been thinking a lot recently about which game I prefer, and I have finally come to the, possibly depressing conclusion, that it's Warhammer.
Here's why:
Warmachine/Horders, Malifaux and Infinity all revolve heavily around you or your opponent pulling off ridiculous stunts during their turn, many of which you will either have forgotten that they could do, or which you never knew they could do to start with. So, for example, in Warmachine or Malifaux it is quite usual for your opponent to be able to accelerate a particular model to move more quickly than its stats, or to be able to use an arc node to channel a spell to assassinate your caster. In Infinity, your opponent may have hidden a ridiculous camoflaged impersonating assassin ninja of doom in the middle of the table, and then after declaring their existence proceeds to move that same model 10x in a row, while you can watch and do next to nothing (even if you can use an ARO to try to react to their moves, this is limited to 'detecting the model'). Even if you succeed, he just moves him on as usual.
(To give a concrete example. My normal Cygnar caster is Prime Nemo. I win games most regularly by the following exact sequence, once my Thunderhead Character 'Jack is within 14" of the enemy's caster:
- P Nemo gives 5 focus to the Thunderhead.
- Arlan Strangewaves activates and taps the Thunderhead with 'Evasive'.
- P Nemo activates and moves the Thunderhead 3" forwards using 'Locomotion'.
- The Thunderhead activates and moves forward 5" (ignoring free strikes due to 'Evasive')
- The Thunderhead lets out an energy pulse, hitting the enemy caster, and then boosts the damage roll (1 focus used).
- He then hits the enemy caster with two Lighting Coil attacks (both autohitting due to the energy pulse - sustained attack interaction). Both attacks are boosted for damage.
- My opponent's caster - who had thought they were safe because they were technically out of range of this chain sequence - has now taken three damage rolls, one at P12+3D6, followed by two more at P14+3D6. Typically, they are killed. Throughout this entire chain sequence, my opponent has not had the ability to do anything at all.)
While all three games have a lot of fun elements, far too often the game revolves around each player trying to pull off a trick that their opponent has either not noticed or forgotten in order to win...
Warhammer, in contrast, is fairly simplistic. Models have a maximum move or charge range and, with a few exceptions, these cannot be easily changed. Even in those few examples where they can, the exceptions are few enough in number that you can prepare for them. When combat does occur, it is resolved in such a way that usually both sides get to participate (none of this "my big warjack of doom charged yours successfully and now gets to smash its fists into your one for the next 10 minutes while you can't do anything except for wait for your turn, by which time your 'jack is probably crippled or wrecked"). The end result is that Warhammer 8th edition has become a game that is very easy to learn, but requires real skill and strategy to master. It is easy to see what your opponent can do, but harder to strategise to beat it. That makes for a fun game.
So, my question to all you D.Net folks is: what other table top miniatures games do you play and which do you like best?
Sorry for the longish ramble!

Well i used to be all about WFB but now i am all about WM.
I have found that WFB doesnt give me the intensity of game the WM gives and ok the tunderhead thing is a good thing but needs to take somethings into account, say a heavy blocking LOS that needs to be wrecked, a caster being immune to lighting, p/eKrueger. Also depending on the sceanrio why is your caster soo close to Thunderhead or you have transfers if you are a Warlock.
There are a number of times i have pulled of a nice janky assassination.
WFb has no pace no intensity, no balanced scenarios, and a few other things, i have really tried to like 8th but everytime i ccompare it to WM it just doesn't match.
WFB is also not a punishing game, once that line has been pulled you will struggle to get that again by position, killing Arlan whcih is possible, force to feat early. Also WFB you use the strongest build, pNemo is not a top tier caster. WM is about learning the hard way and it takes time to get around those tricks. I have games when 1 focus misallocated in 1 turn its game.
I have tried a lot to get some enjoyment out of the game as i was part of the WFB scene since 1999 but to me i would rather be stressing over if i done activations in the right order, if i am safe and see what my opponent answers to, we all like different things in a game but i don't mind that nemo as my Awareness assassination threat is longer as well.
BTW do you play 2012 steamroller as the scenarios are pretty fun.

Currently: Freebooter's Fate.
Otherwise, Necromunda/Mordheim, and a lot of Confrontation 3, but havn't played that for quite some time now (years, literally), since Rackham went down. What a shame.
Warmachine isn't for me. I just don't like how it plays. But it is also very big around here, along with Flames of War and Dystopian Wars (and the likes).

Re: What other tabletop miniatures games do you play?
Currently I'd have to say Saga. It's a Dark Ages skirmish game with typically around 40 models per side, making it cheap on the wallet (historical models = 20£ for 40 models, usually).
It plays very much like 40k in some respects, with models grouped into units between 4 and 12 strong. Here's the catch: each army had identical choices: hearthguard (elite), warriors and levies, which you buy at one point per choice; you get 4 elites, 8 warriors or 12 levies per choice. You can then split or combine identical troop types into units. You might think this makes it uninteresting, but this is alleviated by battleboards:
Each faction has their own board and special dice to roll at the beginning of the turn. The abilities on the board differ vastly between factions, which allows for a radically different experience between factions even when the troops themselves are of equal quality. It's this I find fantastic about Saga, as opposed to WHF and 40k; there's no emphasis on creating an all-conquering army list as the battleboard is dice-driven and thus fickle, demanding a lot of adaptability from the player.
I heartily recommend you to try this game out, as said it's a minimal investment.

Re: What other tabletop miniatures games do you play?
Well, it's mostly been WFB for me these last years.
I used to play a lot of 40k as well as Necromunda, however these days most of my friends don't have the time to play the "serious" games and go for smaller games like Twillight Imperium, Game of Thrones, Blood Bawl (the card game) and we're probably going to play Eclipse soon as well.
Fun games, even though they are much less complex and doesn't challenge me as much as WFB (which I play mostly with those in my local club as well as tournaments).

Blood Bowl is awesome. It was my "gateway drug" into Warhammer. I have 7 teams and play in tourneys, whereas Warhammer is just for occasional fun.
I just wish GW would support it better - I don't think they understand how helpful it is for getting people into a larger games that sell more minis.

I have Warmahordes (Menoth, Convergence, and Trollbloods), Dust Tactics, and am just starting to collect Infinity (Japanese Sectorial). Also have Malifaux (primary Ten Thunders, also Guild). Looking forward to the wide release of Wrath of Kings from CMON.
