Queen Bess? Hell-Hammer Cannon?

Post by Kolken »

I was looking at the vampire-pirates list GW had online for the lustria campaign and was wandering how that last odd rare choice came to be. It mentioned that the Queen Bess could be a "Hell-Hammer Cannon", something to do with the Nuln engineers? Can anyone contribute some history behind this concoction?

It's most likely some random name that GW just made up for the purposes of that fluff. To put it simply and frankly, it's a really, really big cannon.

I'm not sure it shoots canonballs either. 3" wide things... That's a bit big for the cannonaballs.

Probably not cannonballs in the normal sense, but as Ansob. said, it's more likely than not very close to the huge Sigmar cannon they had in Middenheim. If so, it's just a very big cannon that shoots equally large cannonballs, though I wonder how they manage to get that big a ball of scrap metal... just one could make a lot of smaller cannons, mind you.

What? Nonsense - that would be logical! ;)

FYI the Middenheim cannon was called Ulrics Thunder. Thought I might clear that up.

While making a lot of smaller cannons would be more effective in terms of killing power, having a humongous cannonball splat an entire regiment with one shot probably instills profound fear into the enemy army.

This is a historical fact, both the German super-heavy siege cannons of WW2 and the super-nukes the US built during the Cold War were built knowing that the same power divided into smaller parts would cause more damage, but the demoralizing effect of these weapons was considered to compensate well enough.

I've played against the list with a VC-playing friend who wanted to give it a try. We did a series of 4 games, none of which ended well for the forces of Luthor Harkon and one of which I even proxied for a different army (O&G). The fact that all of his troops were zombies made it really easy to destroy large units very quickly, especially without the ability to re-raise them. Most of my magic was neutralized (unsurprisingly) but even with 2 of those move-and-fire cannons, a ton of deck gunners, and a queen bess, things didn't bode well for the undead. The biggest problems it faced was being consistently outmaneuvered, unable to hit *anything* needing 6's, and extremely poor fighting units.

true

This is a historical fact, both the German super-heavy siege cannons of WW2

yes with the heavy guns it would be more effective

and the super-nukes the US built during the Cold War were built knowing that the same power divided into smaller parts would cause more damage, but the demoralizing effect of these weapons was considered to compensate well enough

erm no not really no there is no way you can put the same destructive effect of a hydrogen bomb into several smaller bombs because a hydrogen bomb litteraly trashes 50 square miles of land and makes 1000 square miles unlievable for the next 500 years due to radiation so no it would not be possible to create similar destructive power if you didnt use several thousands "smaller" missiles.

but you are right the main reason with the hydrogen or the weaker uranium bomb is to scare peoble
all your wretched nations shall fall before my axe, and then there will only bee chaos

Hellhammers were an Empire ship type in Man-O-War a Warhammer naval game. Esentially they had a single huge cannon.

The vampire coast list treat me quite well as I am 5 wins to 1 loss, its a good list but the magic items could be a lot better. I've made some conversions for the deck guns and the Queen Bess, check them out here:

erm... you do relise that the blast is bigger than the front of your gun... it works well in the fact u've used motars as normal cannons and a great cannon as the hell bess, but the barrel should be more hell cannon like....

how does the army play? do you have an special tactics with it? what pts do u play?

Ok, I thought the Queen Bess was a massive ship with a huge cannon on it...just because Queen Bess sounds like the name of a ship, and with the idea that it's a Zombie Pirate army, having a ship with a massive cannon on sounds like a good idea. However it is probably just a really big cannon with a cool name.
