Future of infantry

Post by Deplayer »

So, in an attempt to stir conversation, I would like to point out something I noticed with this last end times release. The new blight kings are clearly on ogre bases, which should make them monstrous infantry. However, I have the new glotkin release, and the troop type for them is simply infantry, so only one supporting attack, 5 wide ranks, no stomp, ect. That really doesent make them very attractive.

A bigger point, I am assuming that the end times books are written in compliance of the future 9th edition release. Does that possibly mean that all foot troops will have only one classification and there will be no monsterous infantry anymore? Might be interesting.....or horrible.

Any thoughts?

Or GW realized that the models are just far too big to fit on 25mm bases.
base size creep is a thing... dragons used to be mounted on a 40mm base.

Then you have others you can't decide. Should I make my harpies on a the bigger infantry bases as they are in the beastmen beastiary or the normal sized bases as Dark ELves are on?

Yup. GW models are increasingly resembling GI Joe dolls these days. Just wait - we should start to see detachable missiles that you can fire by pressing buttons on the side of your models soon.

When you have 40k tanks converted from old Z-bots toys sometimes you actually get to do that in a game ;)

This is so horrifically easy to imagine, I just see the camera angles, slow-mo sprung missile, scattered troops and aggressive high speed commentary on the TV ad. Made me smile though.

I used to disagree with Red on this toyification trend.

...but recent releases are making it more and more difficult to defend

Well if they're making stuff bigger, why does pretty much every army still have either 20 mm or 25 mm based infantry, or in the case of the Orcs and Goblins, both? I'd say it's simply that these new Chaos guys are just an idea that was never going to be on a standard infantry base to begin with.... :? :? :?

I don't get the overgrown size of models either :( Mini's have a certain height. Making a monster twice that size should be enough. In retrospect, this is perhaps what I dislike about the new hydra model: it's a tiny bit too big for my taste.
But I still feel the models look good and most of them look amazing.

Carrying those big models around is a pain too. The cauldron model is amazing. But putting it together is a huge pain and transporting it efficiently is near impossible. I have a special box just for it.
