OOC - Guys I am waiting for some sort of agreement on direction here or for a discussion to take place. You've arrived at the docks, looked around either at the ships or the people in the area as you intended in your posts, I have given you an overview of what is going on at the harbour this morning. Now you have gone into the Shrieking Mermaid tavern to speak in private (as there is a lot of commotion outside, people unloading ships and shopping at the fishmongers and collecting newly landed slaves etc. In the bar are some corsairs and other mercenaries of course, but you have found a quiet corner to sit in and discuss. As mentioned, there are a few vessels you can consider, most of them are only destined for Karond Kar rather than the open ocean, but some a more than capable of going out to sea if necessary. Most of them have a crew on or around them, apart from some smaller raiding vessels that are currently awaiting the ice to melt further north. However, the whole dock is busy, so you have to be careful whatever you do...

They were hardly going to improvise and execute a plan just wondering around the docks. If for no other reason than it being somewhere to start they made their way to the Shrieking Mermaid. Situated so close to the dock itself and with love at very reasonable prices the Mermaid was always sure of a reasonable clientele. Very likely more than one of them had a boat to lose in a game of chance, whether any of them would be foolish enough to wager it was another thing entirely. The idea of simply stealing a ship was still an option but such a heist would be no easy feet especially with only two sailors, neither of whom seemed to put much faith in subtlety. So far it was all in the air but they were in a pub (amongst other things) and it would be conspicuous to stand around doing nothing, unprofitable too. Wondering over to the bar Elysian smiled at the barmaid and said

"Brine-fire rum if you would darling," a sailor's tipple from Karond Kar it was rare in the city but he had developed a taste for the searing liquid a few years back.

"Any owners in today?" he asked as the drink was poured, placing twice what the drink was worth on the counter top for a little golden emphasis.

Trying to find out some potential targets for cheating out of a ship and a crew.
Moding a group of Druchii.net players is much like directing the musical 'Cats' using actual cats. Frustrating, difficult, chaotic but ultimatley satisfying and a great deal of fun.

Surprisingly it was Elysian who initiated the proceedings. Ordering some light wine for herself, she took his cue and started looking about the tavern for individuals of power and/or wealth. Maintaining a ship, she reckoned, was a pricy engagement, especially when it's supposed to be sea-worthy. Cheating a reputable slave trader out of his or her vessel, however, didn't seem like the smartest thing to do. Don't piss in your own back yard, one might say, and as such Vryala would prefer a more clandestine and hopefully undetected approach.

Then again, anything was better than having to buy their own ship.

Phalx stepped through into the Shrieking Mermaid. He'd had not been to a waterside hole in a long time. It was the smell of fish and salty liquor that put him off. He spat on the door step, drawing his cloak closer about him. Elysian ordered drink, but the Shade would have none of his salt piss. He sipped from his small flask, his eyes taking in the soot stained nest. He knew nothing of boats, and cared nothing for sailors. Surely slaves could tend a ship? Why he needed for tricksters and liars? They were these themselves, and would not prosper together.

So the Shade stood in a darkened corner of the darkened tavern, taking all in as the others wagged tongues for a boat.

Caraoc sat with the rest of the group in the Shrieking Mermaid.
He just ordered a lager and looked around.
The group remained mostly silent, which fit perfectly the astromancer's plans.

Usually, ship's crews would sit together at the same table and pay little attention to the outside world.
A ship with five to seven crewmembers would maintain two onboard at all time. Caraoc tried to spot a table with three to five sailors.

Listening at them would always be useful: crewmembers would usually talk a lot about their captain and about the problems they faced. The would do it all the more that in the general rumble, no conversation could normally be heard.

Unless one knew how to chanelize air waves towards himself.
With some concentration, for a change without singing nor even uttering a word, Caraoc tried to decipher the Azur waves emerging from the tables he had decided to monitor.

Trying to catch information from nearby's conversation.

OOC: Missing the cap'n's guidance.
Opportunity might pop up.

K knew about three things about this mission ; she knew that she didn't know ships, that she didn't know sailing, and that she didn't know sailors. She knew her companions well enough though, and she felt all she need do was to wait, watch, listen, and be ready to make haste or death. The others took their seats in the tavern and looked about everyone. K looked, to get an idea of who was armed with what, and who they were looking at.

See, maybe, who had crazy eyes, who had cold eyes, and who was drunk. Stuff that could come in handy any time in the next few minutes. She had never been a judge of character but she could see, from bitter experience, about five seconds into most anybody's future, with deadly accuracy, and about five minutes with acceptable tolerance.

K, having no other useful skills in this situation, will scan the inhabitants.

Garbed as they were, the group blended in rather well, drawing none too suspicious looks from the tavern's patrons. But after a few minutes, the lack of initiative shown by the Corsairs, whom she had trusted to deal with the situation, started to annoy Vryala a bit. She looked to her left - people listening in for chance clues. She looked to her right - much of the same. This did not sit well with V, who as always felt determined to create opportunities where none would present itself.

As such, she broke off from the others and made her way to a group of gamblers. Games of chance were not her favourite, but they were the only kind the brigands frequenting the establishment seemed to enjoy and she reckoned it would help her learn about the sailor's mindset if nothing else. Luckily, it wasn't too hard for V to sound gruff and make a passable first impression.

Spare a seat, fellas?

Let's roll some dice

Good catch: one of the nearest table was occupied by four elves whose attire indicated a long time at sea and the lack of a decent home in the city.
They were discussing around a pint of ale.
One of them, a stocky guy with a large black hat, was talking a lot.
Another sailor, dressed in grey stripped with purple, seemed pissed off by the discussion.
The bulkiest one, with a red scarf on the head, just seemed to nod and add silly comments with a loud voice.
The last one, a slim bony elf with a missing hand, was concentrating on his drink.

As far as Caraoc could hear, they were discussing about the battle that just ended in the city, and the taxes that will soon increase, and the necessity to get underway before it happened.

Caraoc stood up with his lager and came close to their table.
If he succeeded to make friends with them, there would be a possibility to get on their ship.
On the other hand, if he succeeded to irritate them, then their ship would be soon crewless.
Either outcome would help the mercenaries to reach their goal.

"Hey mates? Do you care for a song and a drink?" said Caraoc with an inebriated voice.

He pursued with a song he knew everyone in the tavern would know:
Way, hey, up she rises
Way, hey, up she rises
Way, hey, up she rises
Ear-ly in the morning

What shall we do with a drunken sailor
What shall we do with a drunken sailor
What shall we do with a drunken sailor
Ear-ly in the morning

Put him in the long boar til he's sober (3x) / (Ear-ly…)
Put him in the bilge and make him drink it
Put him in a leaky boat and make him bail her
Tie him to the scuppers with the hose pipe on him
Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Slit his pinky with a rusty razor
Tie him to the topmast while she's yardarm under
Heave him by the leg in a runnin bowline
Keel haul him til he's sober
Put him in the cabin with the captain's daughter
Put him in the cabin with the drunken sailor
Put him in the hold and I made him bail her / Ear-ly in the morning

Making friend - or pissing people off?

OOC - Sorry for the delay guys, been busier than I thought over the last week. Not sure if it will carry on or settle down yet. One of the reasons I stood down from the RPG Ruler vote Drainial, I feel it will be safer in your hands. Our baby is due in June (8th to be precise) so we should at least have another good 6 months of this before things get rather hectic my end again. Let's make the most of it while we can eh?

IC -

The group had entered the Shrieking Mermaid under Elysians' guidance, one of several small taverns, inns and more conspicuous establishments located along the docks. The Shadowmancer claimed to be familiar with one of the owners of the flesh house, which was easily identifiable by the hanging sign over it's door painted with a harpy laying on a rock out at sea, beckoning to a doomed sailor. Once they had entered and found a seat, they noticed that the bar area was much smaller than the actual building it was situated in, giving the impression that a lot of space was kept out the back for 'private affairs' and other business. Still, it seemed like a popular drinking hole for some of the local Corsairs. The group had taken a table in a corner quite far from the door, and looked out upon most of the bar. To the side of them however was another table, where two Corsairs sat looking in over everything else and talking idly. In front of the mercenaries was an empty table, then a group of gambling sailors, then a group of four arguing over something. Here and there, pairs and trios of mercenaries mingled with the rest of the crowd, one table in particular seated a large number of Corsairs, fifteen perhaps, all drinking in high spirits, clearly the crew of one of the larger vessels.

The group spent many minutes sitting in relative silence with their drinks or lack thereof, knowing that to enter the building and immediately start going table to table would only draw attention to themselves. While they sat and spoke their idle chitchat, each of them secretly went about some sort of subtle observation of the tavern. Of the six of them Phalx, Karonath and Casaythe were the quietest, partly through not knowing how to proceed and partly through wanting to give off the impression that they were just there for a quiet drink between stops, and would soon be on their way again with nobody remembering their faces. Phalx sat back in the corner of the table and watched what proceeded around him, sipping from his flask between his brief exchanges with Casaythe. The Corsair was waiting for one of the senior members of the group to make a move, despite being one of the two with more expertise in this field. Still, having a Corsair sat on their table drinking just helped them blend in anyway.

Karonath did not participate in much talk, for all the while her eyes and ears were busy elsewhere, taking in the relative strength and weaknesses of all those around her. The two to their right, sat in the corner talking but keeping their eyes on the goings on inside the Shrieking Mermaid, they seemed to be more alert than any of the others. She noticed with a subtle glance that their hands rested on sword pommels, and that both of them were seated with legs away from the corners of the table, where they could stand up instantly if required. As she watched another mercenary enter the tavern and approach the bar, she caught the serving girl glance to the two Corsairs, confirming her suspicions that they were bouncers of some sort, either that or just well trusted regulars who could handle a fight. She looked to the three gambling just in front of them instead. One was drunk, and losing a fortune. Another was tipsy, laughing and playing along without a care in the world, but didn't seem to have much to wager anyway. The third was sober, his drunken motions were clearly acted, and was taking advantage of the fools. Clearly he was not their friend, then. She looked next to the big group the other side of the tavern. They were in high spirits, but they were not too drunk as to be useless in a fight, and there were lots of them, all armed with knives, ropes, chains, hooks and other items. It would not be wise to upset them, but it could start a good brawl if they needed a distraction to escape.

Before K could whisper any of her thoughts to Vryala, the Warrior got up from the seat beside her and, feinting a slightly tipsy stagger, approached the table of gamblers just in front of the rest of them. The sober one had looked at her a few times, and she had made sure to make eye contact at least once before making her move. She had seemed interested in the game for a few minutes before finally plucking up the courage to go ask to join in, or so it would seem. The Corsair that was winning kicked a chair out for her to seat on as she reached the table, and V took her seat just as Caraoc got up and walked back to the bar humming a tune to himself. He was doing much the same as Karonath had, except instead of examining those around them for weapons and abilities, he was filtering their voices in magic to hear their words. He reached the bar next to Elysian, who was still waiting to be served by the young waitress who was changing a barrel. It made the Astromancers advance to the next table seem less direct, less threatening. As he moved off from Elysians side to the four drinking Corsairs, his humming instead became a song.

Elysian watched Caraoc go, the Corsair Mage approaching a table of arguing youths and apparently trying to lighten their moods with a song. He sensed it would either work surprisingly well, or backfire and cause the situation to get worse, but then again the same could be said of most of his experiences with the other Mage so far, especially their experiments with flight a few days before. When he returned his attention to the bar, he realised the serving girl had come over to take his order. The Shadow Mage enquired about the whereabouts of the owner of the establishment, for he had known a lady by the name of Kythara to own it some time ago. The girl shook her head however,
I'm afraid not, our new boss isn't around much, but leaves a couple of his men here to watch over us in his stead."
She half glanced over Elysians' shoulder, and he wasn't foolish enough to look back at the two Corsairs sitting in the corner.
"So this place was sold?" the Mage asked curiously.
"Not sold," she began, "Taken over, though. Look, I really shouldn't be talking about this. I need to get back to serving, them two are watching me now."
With that, the girl turned away to serve someone else, leaving Elysian alone with his drink.

Vryala meanwhile, took her seat at the gambling table and raised a curious eyebrow to the sober Corsair, laughing with him as the drunk spilled some more gold on the table from a previously unopened pocket on his jacket. He was laughing too, as was his half drunk friend, but they didn't seem to know what they were laughing about as far as she could tell.
"So, what's the wager? Who's winning?" said V with a wink to the sober Corsair, waiting for one of the others to answer.
"Th... This... This good fellow... hick... seems to have the better of me, at this... hick... this moment in time."
They all laughed. The pile of gold in front of the sober guy spoke for itself.
"That is nothing," claimed the current winner looking at the coins just spilled on the table, no longer needing to act drunk as the loser was too far gone to notice any more. You already gave me enough gold! Come, there must be something else you can wager, all these coins will weigh my pockets down so much my trousers fall!"
The drunks roared with laughter, one rocking back in his chair so far he almost went over, but Vryala caught his chair and pushed him back upright.
"Easy now, don't fall out your chair and give up that easy. Come, I reckon I can help you win some of that coin back."
The game leader raised an eyebrow, before pushing a handful of coins, around 50g at a glance, into the middle of the table.
"Match it, then we roll for doubles."
As V watched, the Corsair switched his loaded dice for another set, winking at her as the blissfully unaware drunks continued to laugh at their own misfortune.

Caraoc finished his song while Elysian and Vryala were talking to their chosen targets, and was quite surprised to have had two of the four Corsairs at the table join in the last chorus with him. The one that had been staring into the bottom of his glass the entire time they had been in the inn still hadn't looked up despite the song, but the two that had been least heated in their argument seemed relieved by the change in tune and had joined in. Only the arguments leader, clearly the senior Corsair amongst the four, had bitten his tongue and waited for Caraoc to finish before poking a finger at the Corsair Mage with a hiss of displeasure and a curl of his lip.
"Bugger off you crazy fool, can't you see we are trying to have a serious discussion."
The two that had been singing went rather stiff under the authority in the tone he used, as the depressed looking one finally looked up from his empty pint as if having been oblivious the whole time.
I think I need another drink he said.
"Oh come on mate, I know the captain was important to you, he was to all of us I guess, but we'll be alright, right Karith?"
The senior Corsair gritted his teeth, still looking at Caraoc as if trying to tell him to move along without actually talking to him, but answering his mate.
"We'll be fine. We don't need any help from anyone."
He made his point clear, and looked away, ignoring Caraoc.

OOC: AYE KINSLAYER! Onwards to the horizon and battle ya har!

IC: Phalx was glad when the singing fool of a finger waggler finished. The others seemed to be having more luck. It was a pleasure to see how well they moved through the busy pub, becoming a part of it. They'd have a ship in no time no doubt. What was he to do though? It was all in hand, whilst he sipped from his flask, eyes darting this way and that. Once he would have jumped into the game of dice with relish. Today he had no such interest for those sort of things. what to do what to do?

Phalx stowed his flask and made this way through the crowd to the end of the bar, towards Elysian. This finger waggler had fought well so far, a man to be trusted, to some length anyway. Then he was gone with Vryala to join in the game. Fine then, he stood by himself at the bar. Looking back over at the crowd. Nothing to do here. With that a thought came to the wild Shades mind. What lay behind the bar? He had no need for whatever gold could be found, but it would give him something to do.

Phalx will sneak behind the bar. Into the kitchens, cellars, somewhere else. He take any good liquor he can find, and any gold. Just going for a bit of a wander, to see if he can find any trouble.

Caraoc took his most enthusiastic face and replied, cheerfully:
"Karith? You mateys don't happen to be from the Willbreaker, do you? Or was it the Pride of Sea of Chill?"
That was an age beaten trick, but it could well prove effective once more.
Caraoc gave the name of the shooner "Pride", he could be lucky. "Breaker" was Casaythe's former ship, any news would be good to get.

Making nice.

The news that Kythara had been driven out of business was a little sad but hardly unexpected for Vikrah's underworld. Down in the pit you had to carve out whatever you could in blood and gold and if you couldn't hold on to it then that was that. Nobles thought they embodied the true spirit of Naggaroth but amongst the lesser elves too the weak died and the strong prospered. It did mean no help was likely from the Mermaid's owners and from the way the bar maid acted they were not fun or frivolous types, he would try to avoid them if possible. He didn't want to get the girl into trouble unnecessarily so Elysian turned away from the bar and scanned the rest of the room. Caroac looked likely to start a bar brawl, Elysian would have put money on it being Phalx who started trouble if anyone did but he seemed to slinking off on some other errand. There wasn't much he could do with either of them but Vyrala seemed to have wormed her way into a a game of dice. Knowing these places the chances of the game being straight were slim to non, if Vyrala was going to come out on top she would need a little help.

Not wanting to be conspicuousness Elysian took his drink over to where some of the others were sitting, taking his seat beside Casathye. Taking a sip of his drink Elysian savoured the burning glow as it slid down his throat to warm his stomach even as the salty flavour bathed his tongue in the smell of the sea. He had been right, from this place he had a good view of the dice game and a thought came to mind. It was experimental magic as far as he was concerned but deception and slight of hand were all part of Ulgu's blessings. He would need a bit of practice though before he could be sure of anything. Taking another small sip Elysian took a gentle gust of the wind of magic and began to play.

Elysian will sit quietly and try to use magic to affect the results of the dice game.

V sat down with the brigands for a game of doubles. Easy to comprehend, easy to cheat with - as was aptly demonstrated by the snake-like Corsair who'd invited her. It would do her well not to get inebriated and subsequently duped by this canny rogue, and she but smiled in approval at his gesture. The game leader then demanded a wager of 50 gold, which Vryala matched - with a faked swallow of reluctance. Pff, you guys don't mess around. I'm used to more relaxed odds!

She noted Elysian had stealthed in after her; not even loaded dice would be enough to prevail with such powers at her side. But she wouldn't mind first losing a little gold to create some goodwill and loose tongues. She still had a mind to that lovely ketch, even if she hadn't the slightest idea how to operate it. Alright lads, let's see if Atharti yet favours me!

Karonath and Casaythe continued to sit idle at their table, doing their best to give the group something of a low profile, but Phalx quickly left them as he began to get bored and curious. Karonath sighed as she expected the Shade to find trouble, and indeed it seemed he had decided to go looking for it. He made for a door to the side of the bar, hoping to go behind the scenes and find something to pilfer. He quickly gained the attention of the two henchmen sat on the nearby table though, who were on their feet as soon as they saw where he was headed. One of them reached the door from the side just as Phalx did, and clenched his hand on his blade as he blocked the Shades' path. The other Corsair came up behind him, and slid his blade halfway out of the scabbard at his hip.
"Not seen the likes of you around here before... looking for something?"

Meanwhile, Caraoc held up his hands forgivingly as the lead Corsair at the table of four gave a blunt reply to his friendly gesture of a song. He instead changed tact, inquiring about the Willbreaker and another ship, the Pride of the Sea of Chill, trying to learn more about either Casaythes' old ship or the vessel of the group now sat before him. His mention of the second ship only received blank stares from the four Corsairs', but he noticed when he spoke the name of their old vessel the quiet one amongst the group glanced up, a flash of recognition in his eyes. Before he could pry further though, the lead Corsair sighed and looked back up at Caraoc distastefully.
"No, our vessel is the Nightshade. She's in for repairs at the shipworks a bit further up the river from here. Took a bit of a beating in the rough seas that weird purple storm brought over here."
The Corsair suddenly swallowed and took a drink, as if realising he didn't need to explain himself to the random stranger that was Caraoc. Unfortunately for him, the quiet one then spoke up.
"Lost our Captain we did. Took him right overboard, a big wave, straight into the jaws of a Sea Dragon. Was almost like the storm attracted them, never seen so many in one place at once."

Elysian realised he would have no luck with trying to speak to the owners of the Shrieking Mermaid if it had changed hands since his last visit, so headed on back to his seat at the table with his drink, adding to the impression that they were just there to quench their thirst and gamble a bit. He sensed Phalx was about to break that image anyway, seeing the Shade slip away towards the bar with a mad look in his eye, but left him to it. He instead turned his attention to Vryala, watching as the Warrior began to put some coin down on the table, joining in the rather one sided game of dice. After a moments pause to consider his move, he extended his will to the dice as she picked them up and rolled them, urging them to land on a snake eyes, a double one. Vryala had matched the bet at 44 gold, and threw her dice onto the table with a word to Atharti for luck. She cursed jokingly as she rolled a one and a two, while the Corsair got lucky on his first roll with the unloaded dice on a double five. Laughing to himself as he retrieved his coin, along with the new pile added by Vryala, the Corsair mocked the three of them.
"It seems not even your new friend can help you win against me, truly I am feeling lucky this morning! Come, is there anything left to wager? Or do you admit your defeat?"

The Corsair that was only half drunk seemed to have realised that he was out of coin and that his mate was about to lose the last of his, and seemed to instantly sober up a little as he tried to stop the game in its tracks.
"Come on, you've lost enough to this worm, let's leave him to play with this here lady if she so wishes to lose her coin as well."
Vryala sat quiet for a moment, still listening for clues rather than actually enjoying a game of chance just for the sake of it.
"It has been an honour taking everything from you, chaps" teased the sober Corsair, "You have my thanks."
Wait!... hick" exclaimed the drunk Corsair suddenly, "I... I'm not done yet. I want my gold back... how about another wager... my..."
Don't be a fool, mate" his friend tried to warn him.
"My ship... my ship is out in the dock...hick... If I win this round, I get all my... all my gold back. If you win, you get my ship! But you won't, not this time mate... hick... Your luck's run out mate.
Vryala had a moment to interject while the sober Corsair stroked his chin thoughtfully, but it was at that moment that she heard a commotion over by the bar. Phalx!

Vryala cursed with a wry smile at the sight of her low score. Once again, the crafty Corsair had earned himself a tidy sum of gold and his grin widened ever more. Drunk beyond reason, his adversary would not relent; V's eyes flashed. His ship!? This is my chance! Just then, commotion started to take over the establishment, and she needed not guess whence it came. Her Shade battle-brother had once again taken it upon himself to create nuisance and trouble for everybody, being even more drunk than the other patrons it doubtlessly would only be a short while before the place erupted in violence.

She snorted in derision at the thought of having to bail Phalx out yet again, and decided then and there she would have no part of it - he would have to save his skin without her sword-arm this time around, not with the prize so close within her grasp. She risked an urging glance back at Elysian - stay where you are for just one more round... None would realise the Shade's affiliation, for all the patrons knew he was just a lone mountain-dweller with a deathwish. V resolved to keep it that way, at least until she and Ely had procured the vessel. Alright, that's the spirit! How much's this ship o'yers going for!?

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrolling.

Casaythe had tried to keep a low profile in the Mermaid. He'd been at sea long enough to have made some friends... and enemies. And there were those that he was not keen to know that he was in Vikarh. Considering joining Vryala in the game of dice following his suggestion outside to Caraoc, he sighed in annoyance as he overheard his pilot making enquiries. He might as well broadcast to the entire pub that Casaythe Blackstorm was in port. There were a few fellows back in Clar Karond that would earn a good bag of coin if they took his head back to that dog that cheated him out of The Willbreaker, and in shipping circles, word spread fast, making his situation precarious. He gave Karonath an annoyed look, then stood up, his chair scraping across the flagstone floor as he strode over to drag Caraoc out of the tavern by his heels.

As his hand was reaching out to grab the pilot by the scruff of his neck, he caught the last part of the conversation... "Lost our Captain we did. Took him right overboard, a big wave, straight into the jaws of a Sea Dragon. Was almost like the storm attracted them, never seen so many in one place at once."

He brought his hand down, changing tack to instead pat his crewmate on the shoulder. "Is that so?" he interjected. "A tragic misfortune." He shook his head and sighed, feigning sympathy and then grabbed a stool from the next table and took a seat with Caraoc. "But then again, this might be your lucky day."

The shipless captain threw Caraoc a sideways glance and a sly smile. "There's nothing as bad as being landlocked. How would you boys like a share in a fabulous treasure?"

Scheming, trying to coerce the crew into joining sides with he and Caraoc. Insurance against Blackthorn's landlubbers, and they might just get a ship out of it.

Good catch. They knew something about good ol'Willy. Might even be the very same ship that they had left in repairs.
Casaythe understood it immediately. He had not become a captain by chance.
He came close, got a seat and baited them with a treasure story.
"How would you boys like a share in a fabulous treasure?" No decent sailor could resist that.

Caraoc grinned and proceeded on:
"Oooh, there's a lot to say 'bout that. Yeah!He nodded.
But before, I see that your glasses are empty. I'm thirsty too. Too much singing.
Let's get a drink first. That's on my tab.

Then he bent towards the four sailors and asked them in the tone of confidence:
But are you mates really worth your salt on a ship?"

With a free drink, a good treasure story, and a providential leader showing up with a smile, Caraoc was certain to hook them four. Calling at their professional pride was sure to make them brag as being the finest ones.
Good. Caraoc was eager to learn a bit more about them.

Buying intelligence.

A lot can happen in a bar, this was something Elysian had learned long ago. The arrival of their little party had stired up some things and from the looks of things Phalx was about to stir up more to say nothing of the corsairs. He didn't trust them, not where ships were concerned. He still remembered all to well their words during the battle around the library. Even so his attention was taken up by Vyrala and her dice game, from what he could over hear she was going to make a gambit of some sort, he would do what he could to support her. The gambling corsair was almost certainly cheating, V would surely lose unless they could level things out with a little cheating of their own.

Magic cheating to help Vryala.

Phalx had barely taken a dozen strides before the distraction found him. Two henchmen. Well paid 'for their line of work', goons. Good enough with a sword to sort out drunks and the like, comfortably with their small pond authority. Phalx stifled a wicked grin. How many years since he'd been like these two? Before his second trip to the wastes for sure. He heard the subtle hiss of a serviceable blade half drawn. The stupid bugger should have had his dagger drawn, better work for these close quarters. Tiniest hint of drink on their sour breathes, helps settle you into the role.

He gave a weary drunk smile. 'Well I heard from 'Dagger' you know Dagger? Dark hair, scar on his right cheek, kind of mad. Well anyway he'd said there was a good game in the backrooms.' A serviceable story. Utter rubbish of course, but would keep their minds on something else whilst he sat his hand comfortably under his cloak, gripping his short sword ever so slightly. 'If the games not on at the moment, then the pisser would suit me fine, had a few. Care to join me for one in a moment?' Even if they went along with his story, for the drink above all else, he'd kill these two.

He tried to keep that gleam from his eye. He'd seen it many moon ago in an assassins stare, in a dark library, by the gods that felt like an age ago. back then he'd been so like these two. A brawler a bastard. He of course was still these things, but was better at both of them. In the back of his mind he was fully aware of the game going on behind him. He could have his fun, their business would be seen to.

'So lads, can I go join the game, or at least have a piss?'

Phalx is ready to kill these two thugs. Jump forward onto the one before him, taking him down with punching dagger to the gut. Up and turn to face rogue with drawn sword. Get under first wild swing, dagger again to neck and chest. Eye down rest of bar. Jump into brawl as necessary.

As Phalx was confronted by the bouncers a few heads turned his way, but most of them including Vryala looked away again without showing any concern. A few of the regulars laughed as the newcomer was stopped from accessing the more private parts of the tavern. One of the two bouncers, the one in front of him with his hand resting on his sword, shook his head as Phalx tried to talk his way into getting through.
"There's go game on, come back at night. This area is off limits during the day. The pisser is over there."
He indicated to the other side of the tavern, before looking back at Phalx and waiting for him to move on.

At the table in the corner, Karonath continued to sit and wait with Elysian while the Mage carefully watched Vryala at her dice game. His first attempt to control her roll had not worked perfectly, but that had been expected. He was going to try again though, whilst also stopping the roll of the Corsair from landing on a double if he could help it. Vryala had suddenly become a lot more interested in the game now that a ship had been mentioned, but her question was left unanswered as the sober Corsair called the drunkards' bluff.
"Pah! You don't have a ship, look at you! You really expect me to believe that and risk gambling all this coin back?"
The drunk Corsairs' friend was pulling his comrades arm now, trying to get him to leave before he got them into trouble.
"Come on mate, just leave it, let's go find a place to sleep this off."
"I do... We do have a ship, hick... We do. Right out there in the docks..."
The friend jabbed an elbow into his ribs, "The Captain's going to kill you if he hears you tried to gamble away his ship, you realize" he said, dragging his drunk friend to his feet.

Meanwhile, Casaythe joined Caraoc at the table with the four Corsairs, slapping his hand across his comrades shoulder as he introduced himself as a Captain to the crew. Caraoc ordered in a round of drinks for the six of them, before they sat down to tell the four Corsairs' a false story about a treasure they were looking for. They gave them the basic story but left out all the important details, before finding out a bit more about the ship the four Corsairs apparently had in for repairs. It was a small raiding ship that had originally been manned by the four of them and their Captain, and a five man ship was perfect for the mercenaries, with two Corsairs and four inexperienced sailors. Nightshade was a swift and durable vessel, who often made the trip east to Karond Kar and then scouted the coast northwards looking for human slaves. At maximum capacity, she could bring back the inhabitants of two small villages, shackled and chained in her underbelly while the crew stayed on deck. Now without a Captain or any real sense of direction, the four seemed keen to learn more about Caraoc, Casaythe and more importantly, their treasure hunt.

Of course, all they really had to do was get Nightshade out to sea, dispose of the four unwanted crew, then sail her all the way to Karond Kar and out into the ocean beyond. As a sea worthy vessel, she could take them all the way to their destination provided she was in good order. Hence why Casaythe then asked about the condition of the ship and the damage done when the Sea Dragons had attacked, a no doubt exaggerated story that the two had to sit through before getting their answers. She had a minor leak on the port side, and one of her two masts had been damaged by the storm and her sails torn. The reason the four were so glum was that, despite having paid for the repair on the hull and mast with what was left of their Captains' small fortune, they couldn't afford new sails to get back out to sea. If they could get the sails, they told them the ship would be ready to head back out across the sea within a day. With the ice now starting to thaw, several other raiding vessels had already left that morning to make the journey, looking for the best spoils in the first raids of the new season.

The Corsairs continued to talk, while Vryala was left sitting with the cheating Corsair as the drunk was dragged away by his friend. Elysian waited in case more dice were thrown, to help Vryala win herself some coin.

Caraoc used his best storytelling to keep the four sailors hooked.
Every now and then, he would stop and feign to notice Casaythe's frown.
He would interrupt his explanations, look suspiciously around, and tell:
"Ahem... Err... But here, I shouldn't tell too much about that. We will see underway, when the moment has come."

He told them about him being the best pilot in the Sea of Malice and beyond, knowing all stars names and nicknames, having sailed through hurricanes and shoal waters, to enemy coasts and back to homeland.
He explained why Casaythe was the best captain around, who had sucessfully raided countless coasts with unknown names:
"Of course, you never heard about that town: cause it is now a desert."
He told that they had recruited four landslubbers for the task. Those four were no sailors but fierce warriors, able to fight sucessfully sea dragons and even water daemons if necessity arised.
One of them was no fighter but he the best treasure hunter who ever lived in Vikarh. Nothing could remain concealed from him.
Caraoc did not mention about Vryala being a female. Some superstitious sailors could take that as a bad omen.

Caraoc concluded with genuine enthusiasm:
"Enough talking. Captain, what d'you think 'bout getting the sails the Nightshade lacks and checking if this jolly-boat is sea worthy?"
Enthrusting Casaythe with the obvious decision, with the help of the beer, he expected no opposition from the four sailors.

Caraoc wa in no hurry to push the four sailors away.
Once underway, the four sailors could teach a bit of their job to the four mercenaries.
Disembarking the four unwanted crewmembers could happen later, preferably willingly under a credible pretext, in order not to leave any suspicion.
The discovery of Casaythe "true" character and bit of scenery created by the subtle Elysian would easily incite them to desert the ship at first opportunity.
These sailors seemed good at imaginating good stories to hide their mistakes, this could be put to use to cover and blurry their tracks.

Persuading the four sailors to welcome Casaythe as their new captain.

They weren't going to fight him aye? For a moment Phalx was surprised by that. It was rare for thugs like these to show such restraint. He rarely had, and did not feel inclined to do so now. How to proceed though. The death of the guards would throw the tavern into uproar. it would however encourage the rest to move on to the docks a better place to buy or acquire a boat. Yes yes that did make sense.

Phalx will strike both the thugs, moving to wound or kill. This done, he will find the quickest way out of the tavern. He hopes the confusion and death will drive the rest of his parties targets out to the docks themselves, all the better for getting a boat. He'll meet up with them afterwards.

Damn, I really wanted that ship, V pouted, then stood up and made to leave with a farewell's smile. You look like you've earned enough for one day, Corsair, no need for me to stick around and pad that wallet even more! Before long she spotted Casaythe and Caraoc, apparently in negotiations with some other scurvies, and joined in for a listen.

Joins in for a listen.

It looked as though Vryala had hit a dead end in her gambling escapades; a shame, he had been rather looking forward to seeing just how much he could affect the roll of the dice. When she turned her attention to the large group of corsairs in the corner, larger still with the addition of their own two swashbucklers, he saw that they were making progress. That was good but there didn't seem to be much he could do to help matters.

Glancing round the bar he saw Phalx in 'conversation' with two bouncers. His heart sank, neither Phalx nor dockside pimps were known for a sense of restraint or subtlety. One or both would surely start a fight and if it was Phalx he probably wouldn't settle for broken bones. Much as he might like to though there probably wasn't anything he could do about that either, the wild shade barely paid any attention to the suggestions of others even in the midst of battle. Blackthorn seemed able to control him, to an extent, but Elysian knew that no advice of his would settle the shade down. Taking another swig of his swiftly diminishing drink Elysian shifted to the side of the table and laid a hand on his staff. If things did kick off he wanted to be free to defend himself though if he could avoid killing people he would. They were trying to get a ship and slip out of Vikrah quietly, murders would not help that.

Surreptitiously getting ready for the fight Phalx is about to start. He won't go on the offensive if everything kicks off, not unless someone needs rescuing. If anyone attacks him or anyone in the group or in the friends Caroac and Casaythe are making he will block and give them a bonk on the noggin but will not kill unless absolutely necessary.
