Goldswords indeed! There's a Painting Log in my sock drawer!

Post by Layne »

"That's the story of Jesus..." - for a Gold Internezzo.

Yes it's $69, but look at all the neat stuff you can make -

Image

There's twenty god damn two greatswords for one thing. And those neat axes. Here's my plan - take a deep breath, and a pinch of salt -

Get ten boxes [it's a long term plan].

Make twenty pikemen as seen here. Twenty fanzipanz swordsmen as seen here. Fourty crossbowmen with pavise as not seen here. That's eighty men, with which I will make a Milan-themed Tilean army, using Empire rules until GW either makes a new DoW book, or some kind of "All the humies who don't live in the Empire or Bretonnia" book.

The final twenty I shall make into a uniformed unit of Talabheim Greatsooks, as pictured here, which I shall sell off to help fund the expedition. The last fellow is an Estalian Outrider.

That be all fer now, maties.

OH thanks Azoth, for stopping by, and for comments... what you building these days?

So I've painted some stuff, go me.

Talabheim Greatswords :

Miraglianese pikemen and noble swordsmen :

And the first and only steam tank ever built outside the Empire, and where else but Miragliano? The Miraglianese Serpent :

Yes the Engineer has a crossbow. Don't ask ; he's Tilean. They do that sort of thing, and rule not the Warhammer world.

unfortunately I´ve been addicted to online games..champions on line has eaten all my free time for the last month..but I hope this week to be strong enough to start painting again... you´ll see photos this week...(I hope  )..

nice painting, but think the photos look a bit bad...

I think you could apply one more highlight on reds and whites, and maybe some badab+devlan washes in some armour parts to emphasize the contrast

Not that I feel inclined to accept critique from an online gaming addict but ... HA! got you. Yes these are crappy photos, my lamp arm broke and I just couldn't wait til I got a new one. You're probably right about red and white, perchance I'll get a new lamp and decent photos for you, and maybe then we see what you think.

Oh hi. Just thought I'd make sure all my three year old painting threads were up to date, because it's a fact ; the times have changed.

First, because I was so disappointed with the first take, better pictures of my steam tank :
Image
Image

With working hatch :
Image
Image

Some pavise crossbowmen
Image

The Duce of Miragliano and an Estalian warrior priest.
Image

I've put together [almost] the whole unit of foot knights. The shield arms will stay separate for painting. The heads will go on after I have filled in the gaps in the weapon arms.
Image

And I've also just about put together the pikemen. All are missing weapon tops, except the guy with the lion helmet. He's missing a banner.
Image

I have some Bretonnian knights, but I need rather more I think. The army will play as Empire until GW can unequip the Blouse of the Big Girl and fix Dogs of War for us. So I think perhaps a unit each of 10 Miraglianese and Estalian knights would suffice. Anyway, that's probably a project for next year. First I must finish the units shown, plus more crossbowmen, perhaps a few mortars and cannons, maybe some Greatswords for this army, etc., etc., and then there's still Mongoblins... and what the Rose of Nagarythe eh? Still a thing. Still have a dragon in the works, two chariots, Black [Rose] Guard, and some more core and Cold Ones.

Also, I have this : work in progress on the nearly complete unit of Goldwords - the Imperial Feuerbacher Greatswords of Talabheim.
Image

So that's 20 uniform greatswords, converted and painted by Layne, yours to own by purchase at auction, coming soon to an ebay near you.

But before I go too much further, I thought I should ask ; is 20 Greatswords enough, or should I make the unit bigger to make it a more attractive proposition?

Beautiful great swords though I have to enquire about the bases, are there any plans for those or are they on parade ground?

::Grain of salt:: So far as the numbers, I would think about another 10, that way you can hit all of your bases. I don’t think they’d ever really be horded, so no need for 40, but 30, as with opinion(some) on our Exec’s, 30 is a good number to end up in combat after surviving some attention being thrown at them.

Thanks.

The bases are a sort of parade ground type feel. This angle doesn't show it, there will be better pictures when its done.

I had got the idea that 30 or so for elite troops was becoming the norm, thanks for your advice.

I did suggest elsewhere that I would update this log, and you of course read that also, and were wondering, where the heck is that update I was promised? well here it is.

Pavise crossbowmen : GW, I need some official rules from you for crossbowmen with heavy armour and shields. Render this unto me. I thought I had better take some shots f these models in between stages of painting so you all would get an idea of how I go about it, which may be enlightening.
Image

And the foot knights. GW, furthermore to the above I also need a heavy armour option for swordsmen.
Image

The return of Pikemen, with full plate armour if you please, would also be a welcome return. You have your orders, make it so.
Image

Comments and questions always welcome - especially questions.

Regards,

Layne.

Hi dnetters.

It may interest you all to know that I have some new news on this fine log too.

All work in progress, just so you know.

Pavise crossbowmen still getting along. Bits, bobs and bases to go.
Image

And pikes, with the first surprise of the day. Banner only started, and some details and basing to do.
Image

Plus the foot knights return with the big surprise of the day. Tileans wear bronze you know.
Image

All comments appreciated folks.

shiz, everything I just wrote managed to disappeared somehow but here is the bulk of it:

Love the conversions! If you want a cheaper army you could look in to Perry miniatures and Warlord games which makes AWESOME miniatures for Empire/Mercenaries:

Thanks Aenarion. It could be done cheaper but that would be counter to the purpose.

But I do have some progress. I'm calling it finished. There are things I could correct but I'm not sure I want to.

A couple of shots of foot knights :

Pikes :

Xbows :

OMG, full army shot :

Here's hoping you like. Comments always appreciated.
