"Tear of despair" - A Corsair boat

Post by Cat-the-odd »

Hi Guys.

I'm doig a tarrain piece, featuring a small ship. As basic model for that I will use the new Dark Eldar Reaver (that hovership). I already have some ideas for the conversion, but I'd like to hear some brainstorms from you guys.

Ideas:
- use spare hydra bits for a sea beast pulling the craft
- use 2 planks
- modify the sails
- Maybe chage the ram to sth. else?

Now two specific questions:
How to do the lower part?
How to modify the sails
without looking stupid?

I'd be thankful for creative input.

Tasks:
- buy the basic model (check)
- trade Eldar models for cool bits (check)
- concept
- first assembly
- conversions
- painting

I'm doing an army like that, just didn't had enough time to complete it.

I'm using wooden coffee stick to make my bases. It's a great looking base and VERY fast to complete. I'll show picture later on.

I think it's too small a base for actual Corsair ships..

GREAT idea! I'll try to get some of those.

You're right. However it is not a corsair ship, but rather a Corsairs Captain personal boat. More prestige and safer from mutany related health issues. Plus, that plastic kit is too cool and fired the inspiration immediately.

I hope for more input while I'm trying some first assembly.

I like the idea of a boat pulled by sea monsters. I don't know about the sails, but it would be fairly easy to do the lower part of the boat by carving a block of foam to the proper shape, and then glue this strips of balsa or bass wood to it for planking.

For deck planking thats fine - for planking the hull, cardboard would be my advice - unless one is experienced in wooden ship modeling.

@Cat-the-Odd
For a boat of the reavers size , a one masted lateen rig would be my choice.
The reavers hull is imho a major pita to converse to a waterline boat.
Making a hull from scratch would be easier.

Balsa wood would be easy enough if it was thin, and it would automatically have wood grain on it. Balsa is practically like card, you would just have to be careful about bending it with the grain as it will snap (especially the thin stuff)
