Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
I like the idea of Obsidian - that sounds cool... another Option 4. Not sure how well it would look, I could paint it Chaos Black with some dark grey highlights then a few coats of ardcoat to give it some extra shine to look like a polished surface. I don't think this would look as good as perhaps the other options - very hard to create any genuine depth/dimension with something that is totally black.
I have decided to keep the handlers off the main base - it was looking a bit crowded, so have put them on their own bases. Also wanted to keep the Spider shrine separate in case I decide to use it for other role playing type games.
Leaning towards the dark metal look - perhaps I can make it really dark like Obsidian but still give it some extra depth using the metalics so it appears to be forged.

How about instead of pure chaos black, add in abit of green or blue, to make a deep almost black colour, then highlight with dark grey and chosen colour mix.
You should be able to get some more depth in it, then the ardcoat away.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
The trick to painting obsidian is to go pure black as the base color, use a very dark general highlight, and then straight to a pure white extreme edge highlight.
Think about what obsidian looks like in reality. Black, then white edge reflections. There's very little transition between the two.

Just stumbled over your blog, fantastic idea with a great execution. I was never much into the Drow-Theme but this project of yours got me thinking otherwise!

I like the obsidian idea too, from what I remember of the drow books I read this would fit in nicely. Finishing with a high gloss varnish on top of black with edge highlights should do it.
Good luck, looking forward to seeing what ever you decide to go with

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Obsidian idea is IMO great, but You must be careful painting her. With only one - obsidian way, it is for me too risky.
You can paint her body like obsidian, but I would paint her hair white like the rest of the drows, and maybe her tail like green marble. It should help to show her real beauty, and point out she is statue not a living goddess.
Another thing is how to paint obsidian really well. For me it is very hard. IMO You can paint it like You had painted green marble for Malekith in Your AoW entry. But maybe You should try to paint it like this: dark purple/brown shades -> black base -> white spot highlights. Pretty like skin but bigger highlights, almost white. I don't put white paint itself on models. It's because for me it's to strong and it's killing contrasts.
I hope it is a bit useful. I'm looking forward to see it ready.

You might also consider going with a jade green. I think that could look quite striking as well.

So I have finally finished painting this beauty! It came together really nicely, the leadbelcher dark metal paint works well to convey black onyx for the spider queen. Also the attendants looks suitably sinister and compliment the driders in the army.

Wowsers!
You've painted that sculpture beautifully. Most people are too cautious to highlight Black all the way up to White, but it is necessary to make it look realistic -- as you have shown.
Another centrepiece for an army full of centrepieces
P.S. Love the creepy Warlock-ghouls

Pure awesome - love the conversion to start with, and the dark treatment is perfection itself. Great job on the attendants too - they do tie things together nicely.

Re: [PLOG] Drow Themed Dark Elf Warhammer Army
Finally here is the finished army - there is only one model left that I have to paint and that is a beholder, but the one I got I think is to big for the army, so it's back to the drawing board.
I'm quite happy how this came together, perhaps one day I will add some more units to it, but for the time being I have some other projects to get on with.

Absolutely amazing army, from start to finish. I'm simply without words.
Can I ask where is the statue on our cauldron from? It's so perfect for this project.

Love the full army shot. The colour scheme is so well judged - the blues and charcoals and white, then those occasional, super-bold pillars of perfect red. So well composed.
