might it be this scorpio that T.D. linked?
it is indeed citadel made
if so, size comparison should be somewhat distinguished here.
those are 4th ed brett peasants, so little smaller than current plastics.

scorp is almost same size as TK one

@ TD, Melle thanks for the links and size comparison. These are not bad, but look a bit old school.

@ Dalamar - what's the matter do you dislike the idea? I was thinking of using this as a variant for a special character in the army. I guess it is a bit of a clash of genre.

Progress on my Driders is coming along nicely, I hope to have them finished in the next couple of days - will post pics soon.

I just consider Eberron as the redheaded stepchild of DnD.
Drow in Eberron are scorpion worshipping savages. They live in jungles and fight with stone spears.

Thanks Dalamar for the clarification - I was unsure how they fit fluff wise. I came across them in my browsing for inspiration and thought they looked cool!

I might reconsider putting them in the army if they don't fit the theme.

Well, the idea is still cool. They're just very *not* what drow are stereotypically seen as (cave dwelling, black skinned elves with highly evolved culture that happen to be enslaved by machinations of a spider goddess)

So I just got my hands on this beautiful thing for the army (and I just had to have one)

My dilemma now is what do I proxy it for in my army list?

Perhaps a Madeusa, or a K Beast with a couple of handlers, War Hydra, I could perhaps convert it and have it bound in chains.

What are your thoughts?

Immediate thoughts is that makes a perfect Medusa proxy. Although the current base is too big.
The choice of binding in chains as a monster though definitely has some mileage and gives more room for modelling.

It will work as a hydra or K beast.

I was looking at it too when I got my beholder for the medusa... this one is about twice the size, it would make for a really BIG medusa.

Look at the size of its base, it will stick outside of a 50mm base by a wide margin. I think making it a Kharibdyss would be the better option, since Beholders are not known for regenerating, but are known for being pretty terrifying (hence the howl would be explained)

Thanks Dalamar - It's huge. Do you think I should put some Beastmasters with it perhaps and have it in chains? By the way I loved your version with the blind eye - brilliant!

I have that scorpion too. Back in the day you could mount your general on one, which I did on occasion. They did 2 ST5 attacks, but if both hit they became ST10 if I remember right. With only WS3 it wasn't reliable, but it was just bonus on whatever your general was doing. Sometimes could make a big difference.

I enjoy seeing your beautiful paint jobs! I haven't done any conversions, but wanted to share some more of my Drow themed army. Looking to get some WEs soon, will be happy to get some results half as nice as yours, but I have enjoyed creating my Drow and I guess that's all that really matters! They are noticed and liked enough at the local GS for what its worth.

I'm starting to make progress and it's slowly coming together now and looking like an army. My latest edition for your viewing pleasure is two converted units of Driders. These will act as a proxy for my Doomfire Warlocks in the army. This unit was a challenge to make, had to put my greenstuff skills to work (not my strong point). I am quite happy how they have turned out.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?

I have been assembling the beholder tonight and I am still having a dilemma over what to do with it. :?

Firstly what to proxy it for in the army.

Option 1: K Beast
The Beholder could be bound in chains with two beastmasters in attendance.

Option 2: Medusa
I have been doing some reading around on the web researching all about this beastie and came across a couple of pages below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beholder_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)

http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Beholder

Both of them talk about a Bloodkiss or Deathkiss beholder

beholder which sucks its prey dry of blood with its eye tentacles / This creature's eyestalks are replaced with blood-draining tentacles.

This description I think would make for a good Medusa proxy.

Option 3: Taking the Medusa idea one step further and having a Bloodwrack Shrine

My next dilemma what colour to paint it.

I think if it is going to be a KBeast proxy I would go with the red as I have been using this as an accent colour throughout the army.

For a Medusa I think it would look better in the teal colour I have been using, then I could accent the blood red I would use on the model, but by using this colour it ties in with the spiders a little too much.

What do you think?

Bloodwrack shine definitely has mileage, as you combine this with the attendants idea with the eye chained, just make them female instead of beastmasters. More of an obvious proxy too.

Think red maybe the way to go. It becomes almost a centre piece model so should blend into the rest of the units too much, colour consistency is of course needed, but make it stand out.

I still think it will be too big for a medusa, but if you build it some sort of a cage, it could be paraded about as a shrine stand in for sure!

Back to finishing my Drow army and I have managed to knock out a few more Champion models.

Firstly a quick kit bash, my conversion of Drizzt DoUrden. I had a few bits kicking about and thought what is a Drow army without this fine character. I can proxy him for a Hero or Lord.

Image

High Priestess of Lolth - can't remember where I got this model from, works as a nice Death Hag for the army.

Image

Finally, meet the Illithad, the Mind Flayer. Nice simple conversion, I borrowed the idea from somewhere else on the web I saw on another forum.

Image

I hope you like them.

I have one more unit of warriors to finish next and then I will work on the Spider Queen.

Advice needed - please help!

I have finished converting up my Idol of Lolth (Cauldron of Blood) for the Drow Army, quite happy with how it has come together, especially the attendants, I think they will compliment the Driders I have converted and tie the whole army together.

My conundrum is this - how should I paint it? a few options...

Option 1: Paint the Spider Queen realistic, alive (like a living being)

Option 2: Paint the Spider Queen Metallic Silver/Ironbreaker with a Dark wash and Nihilakh Oxide treatment - this would look very sinister, rusted, warped ( I think this is my favourite option)

Option 3: Paint the Spider Queen Gold - I could leave it pristine in the sense that it is well looked after or again degrade it with the oxide.

What do you think?

Honestly, from my memory of the books, the spider queen statues were usually obsidian or another black stone. Huge obsidian statue can look amazing.

As for the handlers... where will they fit on the base? remember cauldron rules changed ;)

I'd go option 2, or go for obsidian looking like Dalamar said (option 4) ;)
