OK! Def not trying to derail anything. Disregard the request for tips on how to paint a Drow model. Just sharing what I've done regarding this topic.

The webs in those photos look just like party/costume webbing you get for Halloween decorations.
Visit a costume shops, ebay or even the pound shop around Halloween.
Love the theme btw

I'm not much of a fan of smurfy elves as a theme but I do give you props for sticking with 5th & 6th edition models!

My only criticism is that your purple and your skin tones are far too close together. The two tend to blend together.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Thanks Vulcan, but Amboadine is right, Cultofkain's question is the subject here. Apologies if I took it in another direction; was just excited bout the subject!
Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
The biggest problem with dark-skinned dark elves is that dark elves tend to wear dark colors.... which tends to blend in with their dark skins. As a result the entire model becomes a muddled mess of dark colors from any distance.
That's a big reason why most players opt for the pale skinned option. Pale skin contrasts with the dark clothes, making the model more visually distinctive at tabletop range.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Hi All - thanks for the comments. The last month has seen slow progress on this army, I have just shifted house and hobby was put on the back burner for a while. I am all moved in now and it is full steam ahead to get some paint on these models as soon as possible. The time off has been good in a way because all my bits have been in transit and have now arrived so I am madly converting and assembling my units.
I have managed to get some paint on my first unit - a bit of an experiment to begin with. I wanted to establish the skin colours and basing for the army straight away. So for your viewing pleasure here are my Witch Elves or as I like to call them my Handmaidens of the Spider Queen.
This was quite a quick paint job for me - I am not 100% happy with them yet - there was so much small detail to paint, I found them very fiddly. I might come back to them and touch them up once I get some more units painted.
@ bond_00kevin - some nice images there for reference, thanks for posting.
@ Vulcan - my dilemma exactly, I am still undecided about the major colour for the army, anything to dark will conflict with the skin colour.
@ Saori - thanks for the tip.... off to costume shop I go!
@ MexicanNinja - thanks this is exactly the part I am looking for - just need to find a bits shop that stocks one, everyone appears to be out of stock.

Very nice work on the witches. Nice to see the spider theme making it to the standard.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Nice work! How'd you get the skin scheme worked out? Looks similar to mine but using different method (I drybrush the highlight on )
As for main color, I use blue. Nobody said dark elves need to be all brooding.
Lighter greens and browns would work too.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Hi Dalamar - here is my recipe for the skin using all GW paints.
- Mechanicus Standard Grey (Base)
- Highlight Raised Areas with a 50/50 mix of the above and Celestra Grey (Base)
- Wash whole area with Drakenhof Nightshade (Shade)
I have touched up a few small spots with the dark base again to finish.
For a basic Game Level paint job I am ok with how they came out - still getting use to the dark color scheme

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Hmm, different scheme from mine then but still in the grey/blue scale as opposed to the really blue or really purple you often see, hence why it looked similar. I like it,

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
WOW! Those are beautiful!!!
Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
The bright gold is a good contrast to that dark skintone.
If you're good with white cloth, you could just go that route and say it's undyed spider silk. Whites can be tricky to do, though.
Beyond that, you're just going to have to do a series of test minis to see what works. Either get some cheap deals off e-bay, or go to the dollar store and pick up a pack of cheap plastic armymen to do your tests on, so you don't have to strip paint off your rather expensive GW models.

That's one of the best dark-skin recipes for Dark Elves I've seen. Nice job CultofKhaine!

They look amazing! The colours work together very well and I agree that white cloth might be a nice contrast.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
So making progress on this army... have just finished a unit of 10 Spider Riders. These will proxy for Dark Riders in the army. This was a good challenge trying to get the spiders to rank up, I separated the legs on a few of them and staggered them out rather than having them side by side to make the unit look more dynamic.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Very nice. They look like they are lounging on the spiders very casually.
Colour scheme works well. All around nice job.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
haha, that unit looks awesome!!!
very well done.
my laughing comes from i spent saturday at minirace court, driving cadually go-cart.
those riders look nothing like casual, they are racing (go-carts).
to me it looks like the riders are reaning in the spiders, and such get a sense of speed into the spidermodels( who in themselves look abit slow)
i really like it, well done indeed

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Another quick update - Drow Sorceress.
Now I am working on converting some core units for the army.

Wow.. those are beautiful paint job. And very fast too.
Love your Handmaidens and Sorceress
I'm not to keen on the spider rider. It would be a lot of work, but will look better if there's some kind of harness or seat on them.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Lovely painting as always, but I gotta be honest and I'm not a fan of the spider riders. They don't look like they'd be able to hold on. Keep in mind that drow strap themselves down to their mounts. Mainly because all of their mounts are fully capable of going upside down.

How would you suggest getting the skin tone like that?
