If you want well designed drow characters read Liriel trilogy, war of the spider queen and lady penitent trilogy (in that order since its chronological)

Damn you! I always thought the Drow were cool and now you have me wanting to do something similar, but I have lots of dark elf models themed in a more traditional way. Now I want to strip them and start over NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Reaper makes a "Dark Elf Skin" paint triad that I've had some success with. I think it's a good look.
The only thing I'd add is that the Dark Elf Skin Highlight needs a highlight above it - I mixed the highlight with a little bit of ivory for the top highlights last time I did it.

The Reaper Dark Elf Skin triad was used on these Martian Firstborn Pirates, if you'd like to see the effect:

@Heldrak - these look great and exactly what I was thinking of.
I am still getting the miniatures together and hope to post some colour tests soon.
Thanks all for the pics and feedback

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
These look close to what I get by doing the following:
Necron Abyss basecoat (it's very deep purple... or black if it's not mixed properly )
Nuln Oil wash (makes recesses pretty much pure black but keeps raised areas dark purple)
Shadow Grey drybrysh (blue tint ties in with Necron Abyss, when I tried Codex Grey it didn't look right)

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
@Dalamar - I have all these colours you have listed will give it a try soon. Do you think it is better to have a blue base (like Necron) to the skin tone?
I was thinking of using GW's Mechanicus Standard Grey as the base with an "Army Painter Dark Tone Wash" I use this in preference to Nuln as the wash, it's very similar to the old Badab Black.
I was also considering a dark purple base to the skin tone... still undecided as to the main colour of the army, because the skin tone is quite a prominent colour I don't want it to clash with the primary colour of the army.
I also picked up some of these the other day for basing the army Blue Anarchy Crystals
http://www.anarchymodels.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_new.tpl&product_id=42&category_id=6&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1
Which I think will fit the Underdark theme really well

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
When I tried grey as base the skin always ended up too bright for my tastes.
My drow follow the books' description of onyx colored skin
and the crystals? I was looking for something JUST like that for my skaven as warpstone chunks. Thanks!

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
@Dalamar no prob - the green crystals would look great for that!
You might find them a tad cheaper at http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/anarchy-models/anarchy-crystals/blue-anarchy-crystals/mini-anarchy-crystals-blue-/prod_15907.html
That's were I got mine from - will let you know if they are any good when I get them

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
If you're still considering alternate Drow flesh schemes, take a look at the Nightcrawler figure that I did as part of this Excalibur group:
The problem with most Drow-themed Warhammer Dark Elf armies that I see is that the flesh doesn't have enough highlighting and the the models just look unfinished. While I agree with Dalamar that Drow are supposed to be black-black-black (in literary terms), on the tabletop, concessions must be made for the overall finished look of the army.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
@Heldrak nice group and thanks for something else to consider - I think this might be to blue for my liking but great to consider.
Does anyone have any ideas what I could use for spider webs? I was thinking cotton wool but not entirely sure this will give the effect I am after.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
That is a very delicate effect you are going after. Not sure how long that would last if used regularly for gaming.
Either cotton wool or some type of medical gauze would properly do the trick if you were careful with the stretching process. Possibly afix one part to a vice and stretch using both hands outwards at different angles.

@Ilmaestro - great thanks for the link...
Getting some great reference materials now for the army. I have a few things on order and hope to soon have some progress shots up... watch this space.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
the guy who made that dwells on carpe noctem as 'wight lord'
im sure he is here too, since his gf plays DE and he has some nice conversions there too. but i dont know.
if you have a CN account, ask him, he is very helpfull.
(though i thought it said in the dwarfplog it was a genestealer head of sorts? so maybe look through different tyranid editions)

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
Yes, wasn't that a genestealer head? It looks familiar. I just did a bit of bing-ing (google was slow for some reason) based on a term I recalled from a while back. "Ymgarl genestealers" apparently have face-tentacles but I'm not sure if there are actual models for them. The games workshop's page for genestealers doesn't mention alternate heads.
Failing that, you could always look into decapitating a Lictor for your nefarious purposes.
Although I've always thought the Dunmer were much cooler than the drow. Bit difficult to warhammerize though.

Re: Drow themed warhammer army - your thoughts?
First time trying to post, so I hope I can get these photos added correctly! Forgive the amateur paint job as compared to you masters of paint here! I painted my DEs with a Drow theme, but never thought to convert models to complete the theme! NEW PROJECT!! The female Drow models posted earlier in this thread are beautiful!! I would love to get results like that! How was that done? Please give tips!

Welcome to the forum. Might be worth starting your own thread, so people can comment and advise without derailing the current one.
However first thoughts are that you are not thinning the paints enough, also look into the use of inks for shading, a wash will give depth to the recessed areas.
